In support of achieving excellence and business results through safe, reliable operations, our Information Technology division is currently hiring for an Informational Technology (IT) Technician.
The IT Technician will perform installations, maintenance and repair work on computer equipment (including, microcomputers, computer terminals, communications equipment, local area network, equipment and peripherals), perform troubleshooting activities and carry out equipment modifications as required, maintain a parts inventory and deliver informal presentations to staff on information obtained through attendance at training courses, and run recovery procedures on damaged volumes, files, or documents and perform administrative activities to maintain efficient day-to-day system operation.
This is a permanent, full-time position which offers a competitive benefits, compensation and pension package and is located on site in Tiverton, Ontario.
What will you be responsible for?
Perform equipment installations. Receive and review work orders, identifying any inaccuracies, omissions, or incompatibilities in equipment components. Follow-up with department analysts to resolve identified problems. Install boards, components, and peripherals. Install discrete components (eg, PC's) on networks. Install terminals and printers. Assist senior technician staff with major installation work as assigned. Load operating software, including communications drivers, using utilities and commands of the operating software. Install specified application software as requested (ie, a designated subset of the principal software packages supported by the Division such as spreadsheet, database, word processing, packages, etc). Verify proper hardware installation by performing established testing routines. Verify hardware/software interfaces using application commands and developed test applications. Refer verification problems to Supervisor.
Perform maintenance service work. Receive and review on-line deficiency reports. Perform preliminary trouble diagnostics, contacting client to assess the nature of the reported problem and to determine possible cause of failure. Use resource information available to draw necessary materials from stock and proceed with assignment in accordance with on-going unit work routines. Use diagnostic software packages and a variety of test equipment (eg, digital volt meters, oscilloscopes, breakout boxes, datascopes, error analyzers, etc) to determine failed component. Replace faulty components with spares, or, perform machine swaps. Perform preventative maintenance as part of each service call. Perform established tests of hardware and, if necessary, operating and designated application software to verify effective restoration. Prepare and submit service call documentation in accordance with unit work procedures.
Perform equipment repair work in the computer maintenance shop. Refurbish and rebuild small peripheral devices (eg, printers, tape back-up units, etc), including dismantling, identifying and replacing worn parts, and performing testing routines to ensure restoration of device to peak operational state.
Carry out equipment modifications in accordance with Engineering Change Orders (ECO's). As specifically assigned, or as part of a service call, alter components and boards including rewiring where necessary.
Perform trouble-shooting activities as assigned by Supervisor to investigate recurring equipment problems, including applying diagnostic methods and steps defined by Supervisor and reporting results for his/her review and further analysis.
Maintain parts inventory, including receiving goods into stock, monitoring inventory levels, and ordering stock at predetermined inventory levels. Order parts for particular assignments upon Supervisor's authorization of the necessary documentation. Ship parts to vendors for warranty or other repair, preparing necessary documentation and making all necessary shipping. Maintain records, procedures, packaged software, reference and maintenance manuals related to systems operation. Maintain an inventory control of computer equipment and related service logs for the Local Area Network (LAN). Conduct annual inventory audits. Maintain records of user access to the network system, record performance data for studies conducted, and update system documents to reflect changes made to the network system. Maintain group lists in mail system on behalf of the user population, and maintain a library of pertinent manuals for the use of staff. Maintain, in a secure location, original copies of developed applications, fonts, software and documentation pertaining to the various applications.
Give informal presentations to unit staff on information obtained through attendance at manufacturers and suppliers training courses. Prepare presentation materials with a view to sharing the most important and relevant new technical information obtained. Document individual discoveries of solutions to new problems while trouble-shooting or correcting equipment failures, for Supervisor's review.
Keep abreast of technology through on-the-job training, following trends as reported in industry literature, and keep informed of new technology for which maintenance will be required. Participate in LAN user group meetings to report on new applications, suggest alternative methods of operation and examine areas of concern in order to optimize use of the equipment etc. Suggest possible solutions to problems encountered by self or others in the system. Participate in vendor-organized meetings to assess new products for integration into LAN operation. Maintain an awareness of existing and emerging technologies and equipment.
Perform routine procedures, such as operating system conversions, upgrades in software and deletions from server files, which impact on the majority of system users. Run recovery procedures on damaged volumes, files or documents; perform cleanup and re-initialization procedures as required. Perform other administrative activities (including writing procedures for administration and users) to maintain efficient day-to-day system operation, informing Supervisor of results achieved.
Investigate and trouble-shoot system failures and malfunctions, where several systems, such as network communications, PC workstations and host mainframe computers are interconnected, and where many users may be involved. Run diagnostic routines to identify operating faults and problems with software and hardware, including peripherals and interfaces. Work with vendor support staff and others to identify corrective action required, and resolve problems in a timely manner to minimize the disruption to divisional clients and activities. Contact appropriate personnel within the division or business unit if the associated client's problems are not within the scope-service provided by the computerized office systems network. Reload software and restore/recreate databases in the event of equipment malfunction.
Perform routine system maintenance and housekeeping activities. Monitor file organization and perform major archiving as necessary to reduce system volumes to acceptable standards. Attend to malfunctions, working with vendor support staff and others to schedule maintenance or upgrading activities. Ensure clients are kept informed of system problems and scheduled downtime. Respond to requests from users and install/repair hardware (eg. boards); hook up printers; install current software; and set up PCs for operation. Create and maintain an inventory control database of major computer equipment (including PCs) for the divisional LAN, ensure all system software is current and keep a service log of divisional and client hardware. Maintain service manuals and information. Provide outline, format and content for unit/divisional user manuals and related information.
Conduct studies, as directed by the Supervisor, to ensure the most effective use of the system with respect to performance and reliability, making recommendations on possible improvements. Develop and maintain a system for monitoring performance and overall network efficiency. Submit to Supervisor, recommendations related to existing systems and provide input on proposed incoming systems.
Assist in the development, testing and implementation of computer programs, both commercial and in-house, for divisional and client computer systems. Review new operating procedures and upgraded software versions. Evaluate and test other computer applications as assigned, using a standard developed to maintain the integrity of the system. Review and arrange or demonstrate programs to users, address their concerns and implement approved systems as instructed. Develop, test and maintain business/line applications and other divisional programs as requested. Demonstrate equipment and its associated software applications as requested by Supervisor or as circumstances dictate.
Coordinate activities and install, test and evaluate new/upgraded software and equipment to enhance performance levels. Ensure proper equipment configuration, and run efficiency measures. Provide Supervisor with assessments of the impact on the network in terms of efficiency and effectiveness and recommend changes where appropriate.
Assist in the development and maintenance of divisional office systems standards and procedures, to utilize the divisional LAN services in an efficient and cost effective manner. Provide a support function to divisional staff, including assistance and guidance in the operation of systems and applications. Work with users to identify deficiencies in computer services and reach agreement on problem resolution. Coordinate work efforts with users to determine priorities to achieve satisfactory systems operation and advise them of new system enhancements, applications, deficiencies and downtimes for maintenance.
Perform other duties as required.
Knowledge and Skills
Requires experience with a broad range of computerized office systems and applications software to assist users in the operation of the systems, to perform routine system procedures such as operating system conversions, to trouble-shoot malfunctions and to install hardware and software.
Requires experience to be familiar with the practical aspects of installation, maintenance, repair, modification, and trouble-shooting work for a variety of computer equipment including microcomputers, computer terminals, communications equipment, local area networks, word processors, and peripherals.
Requires experience to be familiar with related test equipment and test packages, manuals, operating and maintenance processes and related standards, procedures, work routines, practices, work programs, and schedules.
Requires experience with utilities, commands and application software to perform assigned installation and maintenance activities. Requires experience in preparing and making presentations of information and materials obtained at courses.
Requires a detailed knowledge of computerized office systems and applications to understand the use and operation of computer terminals, local area networks and associated peripheral equipment in order to provide support to users, perform routine maintenance and trouble-shoot system failures and malfunctions.
Requires a knowledge of utilities and commands used to write and test specialized batch programs, to manipulate files and to set up system conditions.
Requires a knowledge of general business and office practices in order to understand the requirements of office systems functions.
Requires a knowledge of English to communicate effectively with users to prepare and deliver informal presentations, to provide assistance, and to prepare and update documentation such as divisional office systems standards and procedures.
Requires a knowledge of electricity, mathematics, physics, electronic devices, electronic circuits, measurements, computer hardware, software, interfacing and peripheral devices.
Requires this knowledge to understand the theory and logic involving digital electronics and applications to computer-based equipment in the data processing and related communications area.
Requires a knowledge of the use of test equipment, test packages, and diagnostic methods and techniques in trouble-shooting to locate, isolate and resolve problems.
Education and Experience
This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired in a Grade XII education in a secondary school plus up to 2 years further concentrated study in relevant courses, or the equivalent education.
A period of over 3 years and up to and including 4 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
