Currently, our Emergency and Protective Services has a Section Manager, Emergency and Protective Services, Fire Protection Programs opportunity.
This is a permanent, full-time position which offers a competitive benefits, compensation and pension package and is located on site in Tiverton, Ontario.
What will you be responsible for?
Provide support to the Department Manager in managing the Department in accordance with applicable legislation, policies, programs, procedures and agreements.
Maintain up-to-date documentation that specifies procedures for ensuring that correct and safe practices are followed and plant reliability and availability are maintained at a high standard.
Ensure that all assigned personnel are appropriately trained for the tasks delegated to them and have appropriate qualifications and authorization.
Provide day-to-day coordination across Departments and Sections.
Ensure value for money and achievement of the Division's business plans.
Monitor performance and initiate any actions necessary to correct any adverse trends.
Provide an oversight role related to fire protection programs on site.
Liaise with insurance and regulatory representatives.
Monitor testing, inspection and maintenance results for fire protection systems.
Participate in the review of fire protection systems and features from qualified vendors.
Evaluate design changes for compliance with fire protection, building and life safety codes, standards and commitments.
Develop and conduct fire protection inspection programs.
Define the availability requirements for fire protection systems and response to impairments. Provide oversight of the Fire Protection Impairment process.
Monitor the site for compliance with fire safety regulatory requirements and assist in development of plans to restore compliance as necessary.
Implement controls on combustible materials and ignition sources and monitor for compliance. This includes the transient material process.
Define the process for the review of potential fire hazards generated by operating and maintenance work and project activities. Provide oversight of the hot work execution.
Participate in the development of technical surveillance programs for fire protection systems and implementation of the same.
Arrange for and participate in fire investigations.
Monitor hot work on the site for compliance with procedures.
Carry out managerial accountabilities in accordance with approved policies, procedures and standards.
Provide meaningful input to the business plan and formulation of department work programs, tasks, cost control procedures and requirements.
Develop work plans, consistent with time horizon of role to achieve own tasks. Utilizing these work plans, establish subordinate activities, controls and limits.
Formulate specific tasks, obtaining subordinate input, as appropriate, prior to finalization.
Assign tasks to subordinates ensuring the complexity of same is appropriate, discussing the limits and methods to be used, specifying the task parameters and setting overall context for the assignment.
Act as a coach and facilitator to create and sustain a non-threatening, supportive, team environment, actively working with staff to assist them to attain optimal work performance with a high level of personal responsibility and self-management.
Demonstrate openness and trust through the sharing of information and through establishing two-way team relationships, holding regular meetings with all immediate subordinates to discuss various subjects, for example, safety, context-setting, plans, problems and suggestions for improvement.
Identify training requirements required to perform tasks, ensuring the training is relevant and adequate feedback regarding proficiency is provided.
Establish performance measures and perform personal effectiveness appraisals and annual merit reviews, with discussions on merit or salary adjustments, as required.
Make effective recommendations for staff selection and induction, taking appropriate and timely actions to deal with unsatisfactory performance, consistent with approved policies and procedures.
Provide a work environment, which is conducive to employee well-being, and diversity, which is harassment free, continually improving the processes, consistent with the philosophy and goals of continuous quality improvement.
Ensure management systems are in place to meet all due diligence requirements and are effectively managed on a continuing basis.
Perform other duties as required.
Education and Experience
This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the completion of 4 years of University training in a relevant discipline
A period of over 8 years and up to and including 10 years is considered necessary to gain this experience
