And that's where you come in.
Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid)
Under the leadership of the Independent Validator, conduct validation activities for Hitachi Rail development and integration centres. Independent Validation activities ensure that products and applications developed and deployed as URS solutions are fit-for -purpose and able to accomplish intended use, goals, and objectives (i.e., meet stakeholder requirements) in the intended operational environment(s). Independent Validation is performed, by an organization that is not directly engaged in solution development, with the intent of objectively evaluating the suitability of the development project's outcome and independently reporting that evaluation to business line safety authorities and senior management. To achieve this, the department must contribute to company culture and practices to ensure all staff clearly understand technical objectives and responsibilities and employ processes that are compliant with industry standards and best practices for the development of mission and safety-critical systems.
Key Accountabilities: The Technical Specialist, Independent Validation, is responsible for the following:
- Define and develop processes and support the implementation of processes, for testing, integration, verification and validation, that align with industry best practices, international standards, and the expectations of our customers, including development of awareness and training programs;
- Identify issues related to technical safety and applied processes, and ensure timely escalation and resolution of the issues;
- Provide leadership and guidance to assist in dependability-related decision-making;
- Provide direct support to the Bids and Proposals process such that informed decisions can be made regarding technical and contractual dependability issues at the earliest opportunity in a commercial Project's lifecycle;
- Stay current with practices and processes applicable to railway and other mission and safety-critical industries (e.g. aerospace, military, nuclear, modern medical technology); and D
- Develop understanding of the solution, the delivered system including its software, hardware and services, defined for use in the intended application environment as well as the tools, techniques and measures employed in its development and support.
- Prepare plans specifying activities for validation of the solution, including preparation of validation reports, particularly addressing Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS) and Quality as an integral part of that overall solution verification and validation.
- Ensure concepts for function and RAMS can be feasibly established in the solution designs and in the processes specified for its operation, development and deployment, ensuring appropriate allocation to architectural elements and interactions.
- Ensure planned validation activities are performed and the related hazard logs and remaining non-conformities are reviewed, including the closure of all hazards in an appropriate manner through elimination of risks by control and transfer measures.
- Review: system, software and hardware requirements against the intended environment/use, ensuring all are fulfilled; correctness, consistency and adequacy of the verification and testing; deviations from plans and expectations, ensuring risks (impact) are appropriately classified, recorded and submitted to the change control board for disposition; validation reports relating to previous applications, as appropriate; and that developed solutions are traceable to expectations.
- Carry out audits, inspections or reviews on solution development (as an instantiation of the generic development process); as appropriate in various phases of development; evaluate the conformity of the system, software and hardware processes and the developed systems, software and hardware against the requirements of CENELEC and/or AREMA including the assigned integrity level and give a recommendation on the suitability of the solution for intended use and indicate any application constraints as appropriate;
- Define and conduct or witness supplementary and exploratory tests which stress the system, by using insight from previous testing to inform definition of further testing, in order to confirm that the solution fully satisfies its users' expectations.
- Check the correctness, consistency and adequacy of testing, integration and verification and capture deviations from the validation plan, including those results in the validation report.
Key Requirements: - Minimum ten years experience designing or testing of embedded real time systems or equivalent software or hardware design or test experience.
- B. Sc. Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering or equivalent.
- A broad exposure to the development of mission and safety-critical systems, ideally communications-based train control technology.
- Experience performing engineering lifecycle activities. Experience auditing and assessing activities relevant to determination of the fitness-for-purpose of a developed and deployed system, such as System Engineering and Verification & Validation activities.
- Extensive knowledge of safety design principals and processes.
- Extensive knowledge of specification-driven system design (as it applies to computer systems with both hardware and software operation).
- Knowledge of CENELEC standards, AREMA, and other international safety and signaling design standards.
Preferred Qualifications: - Substantial experience in real-time testing of embedded real time systems or equivalent software or hardware test experience
- Computer literacy including word processing, spreadsheet, and databases is essential. Computer literacy using special application software such as problem tracking, requirement management and parsing software
- Knowledge of transit rail system and particularly SELTRAC products is a significant asset
- Demonstrated fluency and understanding/comprehension in oral and written English
- Understands basic engineering management practices for project planning and scheduling
- Field experience in a rail transit installation, test or support environment or similar technology application is of significance
- Experience in task planning, including estimation, performance tracking and reporting
- Engineering risk and decision-making process is desirable
