In support of achieving excellence and business results through safe, reliable operations, we are currently hiring for an Industrial Hygienist.
This is a TERM position which may be for a period of up to 60 months, offers a competitive compensation package and is located on-site in Tiverton, Ontario.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide specialist services in industrial hygiene as requested by Supervisor to all Bruce Power facilities.
Formulate and develop programs related to hazardous agent sampling, monitoring, assessment, complex problem solving and control. Recommend improvements and controls for safe work planning and discuss with Supervisor. Implement on approval.
Investigate actual or potential worker or public exposures to hazardous agents due to the Corporation's activities. Prepare reports on the result of such investigations. Communicate to staff and management the results and technical recommendations.
Establish hazardous agent control practices and procedures. On request, assess line management's conformance to Corporate policies with respect to hazardous agents.
Assist in the implementation and interpretation of policies, regulations, guidelines, procedures, etc, to ensure protection of workers and the public.
Provide clear communications, technical advice, and recommendations on the effectiveness of hazardous agent monitoring control equipment.
Initiate and conduct studies relative to hazardous agents’ management at the specialist level as required. Develop, as necessary, methods and establish techniques for field sampling and testing instruments.
Provide management risk analyses and review of processes or operations to determine the need of monitoring and control of safety hazards to employees and the public. Assist in the formulation and review of technical directives, policies, etc, to minimize employee and public risk to hazardous agents.
Perform hazard analysis, provide information and make recommendations and advice to design groups for design changes which will eliminate or minimize risks to workers or public.
Provide information to line management on hazards, and control and protective equipment for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological agents.
Act a resource person to customers or Industrial Hygiene Services function, as required.
Carry out periodic supervision to staff provided to assist in carrying out various phases of work programs.
Participate in the development and/or delivery of industrial hygiene training programs as requested by customers groups and/or Supervisor.
Keep abreast of current literature and government regulations pertaining to industrial hygiene.
Lead discussions with the regulator on Industrial Hygiene related investigations.
Perform other duties as required.
Knowledge & Skills:
Requires a knowledge of chemistry, physics, acoustics and industrial hygiene to a level to be certifiable by the American Board of Industrial Hygienists in order to provide expert assessments, monitoring methods, and control of hazardous chemical, physical, and biological agents.
Requires facility in written and oral English to prepare effective reports, give and receive instruction, and to interact with a variety of both internal and external personnel.
Requires environmental and/or industrial hygiene experience as would be gained in a large industrial organization to become familiar with the function of hazardous agent control equipment/devices, hazardous agent control programs, hazardous agent assessment programs and design reviews for control of hazardous agents and the nature of safety problems.
Requires experience to become familiar with investigating and identifying working conditions detrimental to the health of employees and the public, including control of the toxic pollutants and other industrial hazards, such as all chemicals, biological and physical agents.
Requires experience in the function to become familiar with the organization, the internal and external contacts and the health and safety.
Education and Experience
This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through successful completion of a four year university course in chemical engineering, applied chemistry, physics, medicine or related biological sciences plus an appropriate master’s degree, or having an equivalent level of education.
The following professional designations are strongly recommended for the role, Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
A period of over 8 years is recommended to gain this experience however, candidates with less than 6 years of experience may be considered
