Overview
The QC Welding Engineer will be responsible for quality control and assurance of all welding-related activities carried out by contractors and subcontractors for the metro project. Working as part of the PMC team, the role ensures that welding works comply with approved procedures, specifications, applicable codes and standards, and project quality requirements.
The QC Welding Engineer will oversee welding activities associated with structural steel, piping, mechanical systems, equipment supports, and other welded components across stations, depots, and metro facilities.
Your role
Quality Control & Assurance – Welding
- Act as the PMC's specialist representative for all welding-related quality matters on site.
- Ensure that all welding works are executed in accordance with:
- Contract specifications
- Approved drawings and method statements
- Approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
- Project Quality Plan and Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs)
- Applicable international standards (e.g., AWS, ASME, ISO, EN, BS)
- Monitor contractors' compliance with approved welding procedures and quality requirements at all times.
Welding Procedures & Documentation
- Review and provide recommendations on:
- Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
- Procedure Qualification Records (PQR)
- Welder Performance Qualification Records (WPQR)
- Verify that only approved welding procedures and qualified welders are used on site.
- Ensure welding consumables, electrodes, filler materials, and gases comply with specifications and are properly stored and handled.
Inspection & Testing
- Carry out or witness inspections for welding works at all stages, including:
- Fit-up and joint preparation
- Welding execution
- Visual inspection (VT)
- Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) such as RT, UT, MT, PT (as applicable)
- Coordinate with third-party testing agencies and review NDT reports.
- Ensure repair procedures are approved and properly implemented where welding defects are identified.
Site Supervision & Surveillance
- Conduct routine surveillance of welding activities at stations, depots, workshops, and site fabrication yards.
- Verify that welding equipment, machines, and calibration records are valid and compliant.
- Ensure pre-heating, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), and environmental controls are applied as required.
- Monitor welding activities involving:
- Structural steel works
- Mechanical and piping systems
- Equipment supports and frames
- HVAC duct supports and mechanical installations (as applicable)
Non-Conformance & Corrective Actions
- Identify, record, and report welding-related non-conformances (NCRs).
- Verify implementation and closure of corrective and preventive actions.
- Support root cause analysis for repeated or critical welding defects.
Coordination & Interface Management
- Coordinate closely with:
- Resident Engineers and discipline engineers (E&M, Civil, Structural)
- QC Inspectors and site inspectors
- Contractors' QA/QC teams and welding supervisors
- Participate in coordination meetings related to quality, construction sequencing, and interface issues.
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Ensure welding activities comply with project HSE requirements.
- Verify that contractors implement safe welding practices, including:
- Hot work permits
- Fire prevention measures
- Proper PPE usage
- Safe handling of gas cylinders and welding equipment
- Participate in safety audits and inspections as required.
Reporting & Records
- Maintain accurate records of welding inspections, approvals, and test results.
- Prepare regular reports on welding quality status, issues, and trends.
- Contribute to weekly and monthly quality reports prepared by the PMC team.
Support to Testing, Commissioning & Handover
- Support final inspections and punch listing related to welded components.
- Verify completion and approval of welding dossiers and quality records for handover.
Ensure welding documentation is complete, traceable, and ready for final acceptance by the client and operator.
About you
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related discipline.
Professional Certifications (Preferred)
- Certified Welding Engineer (CWE) / International Welding Engineer (IWE)
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent
- CSWIP 3.1 / 3.2 or equivalent certification (highly desirable)
Experience
- Minimum 8–12 years of relevant experience in welding inspection and quality control on large infrastructure or industrial projects.
- Proven experience on metro, railway, transportation, or large-scale infrastructure projects is highly desirable.
- Prior experience working within a PMC / Engineer / Supervision Consultant role is strongly preferred.
- Experience overseeing welding works by multiple contractors and subcontractors.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of international welding codes and standards (AWS, ASME, ISO, EN).
- Familiarity with NDT methods, acceptance criteria, and reporting.
- Understanding of welding in structural steel, piping, and mechanical installations typical of metro projects.
Software & Tools
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel).
- Ability to review drawings, WPS, and technical documents.
- Familiarity with document control and quality management systems.
