JOB SUMMARY:
This role is responsible for leading and delivering the safety analysis for SaskPower’s first nuclear power plant. This role’s accountabilities are critical to the licensing, design and construction of SaskPower’s nuclear power plant(s). This position ensures compliance with nuclear industry best practices and the requirements of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
The Specialist, Nuclear Safety Assessment would possess a strong background in nuclear engineering or a related field, with extensive experience in safety analysis within the nuclear industry. They should have a deep understanding of nuclear safety regulations and best practices, particularly those set by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. This individual would be highly analytical, detail-orientated, and capable of managing complex safety analysis process. They should also be proficient in using safety analysis software and have a proven track record of leading safety analysis projects.
In addition to technical expertise, the candidate should have excellent communication and leadership skills. They must be able to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, provide mentorship to all staff, and interact confidently with regulatory bodies. The ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships, both internally and externally, is crucial. The ideal candidate would also be adaptable, capable of working in a dynamic environment, and committed to maintaining high-quality standards in all aspects of their work.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Lead the safety analysis for SaskPower’s nuclear power plants, ensuring it is conducted in accordance with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
• Manage the safety analysis business process and execute related work.
• Identify and secure internal and external resources required for safety analysis, including competencies and quality requirements.
• Develop scopes of work for external agencies, award contracts, and manage deliverables
• Address and respond to questions and concerns from the regulator regarding safety analysis.
• Develop and update governance documents (programs, procedures, instructions, guides, forms) to ensure effective implementation of safety analysis requirements.
• Ensure design and licensing areas are familiar with and appropriately integrate safety analysis.
• Lead the internal cross-functional oversight team.
• Provide mentorship and support to all staff to ensure understanding and implementation of safety analysis.
• Document and report on safety analysis activities and findings.
• Plan, develop and present training courses for staff to ensure understanding and implementation of safety-related policies and procedures.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
• Degree in related field, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Behavioural Science or other related equivalent
• Five (5) to Ten (10) years’ experience performing or overseeing safety analysis in the nuclear industry.
• Familiarity with safety analysis software.
• Team player with the ability to build and maintain strategic relationships both internal and external to SaskPower
• Results oriented thinker, with the ability to manage and provide advice regarding complex and confidential issues with sensitivity and professionalism
