BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada and is critical to delivering carbon free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.
Role Purpose:
Reporting to the Director, Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions, with a dotted line to BWXT Medical, the Nuclear Medicine Isotope (Mo-99) Target Delivery System Manager – “TDS Manager” is accountable to ensure the TDS system can satisfy its weekly delivery requirements of irradiated molybdenum to BWXT Medical for post processing. The Target Delivery System operates at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station and is a complex nuclear piping system that incorporates automation to irradiate material in an operating reactor.
Specific responsibilities and accountabilities include:
- Leadership of a multifunctional team to maintain the operational requirements of TDS. Scope of work to be managed includes providing daily support to operations, conducting required design changes, procuring spare parts, and supporting maintenance (planned/unplanned).
- Contribute directly to the support of the system. Knowledge of the design and design change process is required.
- Respond to production concerns, leading the cross-functional team through effective problem solving, troubleshooting and decision making.
- Plan for the execution of regular maintenance. Portions of this maintenance may take place during a reactor outage and diligent planning in accordance with utility governance is required. Maintenance work is executed in accordance to OPG procedures and QA programs.
- Develop long term maintenance strategies that contemplate the efficient implementation and associated cost management. Collaborate with OPG operations and BWXT Medical to understand and limit the impact to revenue for the program.
- Provide immediate response to unplanned maintenance. Due to the sensitivity of the supply timing 24/7 support is required in response to issues that affect planned production.
- Provide sustained periods of leadership and additional work load during outage and unplanned maintenance windows.
- Coordinating and collaborating with maintenance team to established requirements and maintenance strategies.
- Developing system performance tools and processes to support predictive reliability and maintenance. Leverage associated tools to drive cost effectivity in the maintenance strategy.
- Providing guidance to the team in the execution of parts and kits supply.
- Achieving and maintaining effective project planning, reporting management, milestone completion on-time / on-budget, meeting metrics, and achieving results through influencing, actions and setting of expectations.
- Interface with key partner resources: OPG operations, BWXT Medical operations, and BWXT Field Services.
- Maintaining knowledge of, and participating in, the commercial elements of the program.
- Presenting to various stakeholder groups including executive management teams of the associated partners.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelors’ Degree (Engineering preferred). Technical Degree/Diploma or Technical certifications in the related fields would also be considered.
- Minimum (10) or more years’ experience in a design, operations, field services &/or equivalent work-related experience.
- Minimum (5) years in a leadership position
- Experience with OPG operations and maintenance for complex equipment.
- Leadership in one or more of the following areas: Engineering design, production manufacturing, commercial operations, and complex maintenance programs.
- Resource, scheduling, and financial management experience.
- Strong negotiation, interpersonal and communication skills
- Experience in the Nuclear, Aerospace, Medical, Transportation or other highly regulated industry. Experience in the nuclear industry is considered an asset.
- Travel (approximately 50%) will be required. The core support team is stationed in Peterborough, Ontario. The TDS is operated in Clarington, Ontario. The isotopes are processed in Kanata, Ontario.
The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $107,000.00 and $156,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
