Our Whiteshell location is looking for a Health Physicist to protect CNL employees and the public from the adverse effects of radiological or related hazards. If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you!
The position incorporates the disciplines of physics, engineering, biology, environmental sciences, and occupational health and safety. The Health Physicist applies their knowledge and experience to develop and implement processes and strategies ensuring compliance with regulations and the CNL Radiation Protection Program and to perform radiological characterizations and assessments to ensure radioactive materials and wastes are safely managed and that work activities are planned and executed as safely as possible.
What will you be doing!
Providing Radiation Protection (RP) Program management and oversight
- Monitoring and reporting radiation protection performance.
- Conducting RP compliance inspections of nuclear facilities, radioactive material areas and decommissioning areas.
- Conducting self-assessments of implementation of RP program elements.
- Approving Whiteshell Laboratories specific Radiation Protection training.
- Approving radiological clearance survey methodology and accepting survey results for the clearance and release of buildings and lands
Operational health physics services for assigned facilities and projects
- Providing assessments and advice for the safe and compliant application and implementation of specific radiation protection program elements in the design, construction, and operation of nuclear facilities, decommissioning, and waste management activities.
- Performing, reviewing and/or approving radiological hazard and safety assessments and the selection of radiological hazard controls and safety measures for operational, decommissioning, and waste management activities.
- Preparing radiological safe work documents for specific radiological related facility, decommissioning, and waste management work packages.
- Providing oversight for the field execution of radiological work, review and approval for resumption of work following radiological stop work conditions and post-work reviews of radiological performance and lessons learned.
- Responding to radiation and contamination exposure incidents and event.
- Conducting radiation protection training.
Technical health physics services for measurement of radiation and radiological characterization and clearance
- Providing direction and oversight of the purchase, calibration, and maintenance of radiation and contamination monitoring systems.
- Providing direction and oversight of the purchase, calibration, and maintenance of RP instrumentation for radiation protection, characterization or clearance.
- Developing plans, field survey instruction, execution oversight, evaluation of results, and preparation of reports for radiological characterization and clearance surveys of buildings, lands, materials, and equipment, and off-site sending of samples.
- Providing direction and oversight for the selection and use of contamination fixatives and decontamination methods.
- Providing direction and oversight for the selection and use of external and internal dosimetry dose monitoring method.
What we are looking for:
Abilities and Skills:
- Crucially important are excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) in English and the ability to obtain the formal CNL HP qualification known as “Group 1”.
- Must have the ability to wear protective clothing and to work in a hazardous environment.
- Must be a mature, organized self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member in establishing priorities, and achieving goals and objectives when faced with varied and conflicting demands.
- Discipline to remain focused and complete assignments on schedule.
- Ability to prioritize and perform multi-tasking.
- Ability to establish priorities and achieve goals and objectives in a work environment with varied and sometimes conflicting demands.
Experience
- Must have at least ten years post-graduation Health Physics experience, preferably with 2+ in decommissioning.
- Ideally will have extensive experience and understanding of work tasks, their execution, and associated radiological hazards as well as the ability to learn from others and absorb new/related knowledge quickly.
Education
BSc or MSc in Physics, Health Physics, Radiation Protection, Medical Physics and/or Engineering Physics (or equivalent education such as BSc science degree and work experience).
Security clearance eligibility required:
Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.
