Chief Executive Officer
Canadian Nuclear Society
Lead organizational renewal. Build meaningful partnerships. Advance Canada’s nuclear community.
The Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) is seeking a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead its operations, strengthen its national network and deliver sustainable growth. This is an opportunity for an executive leader and relationship builder to help shape the Society’s next chapter, translating strategy into valuable programs, engaged membership and lasting partnerships.
About the Canadian Nuclear Society
CNS is a not-for-profit, member-driven organization dedicated to advancing the exchange of knowledge about nuclear science, technology and their peaceful applications. Through local branches, technical divisions and volunteers, the Society connects Canada’s nuclear community through technical conferences, courses, seminars, educational initiatives and professional networking. Its interests span nuclear power, the nuclear fuel cycle, radioactive waste management, medical and industrial applications of radionuclides, radiation protection, fusion, and research and development.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the CNS President (Board Chair), the CEO will be accountable for the Society’s effective operation, growth and financial sustainability. Working closely with the Board, Office Manager, committees and volunteers, you will turn Board-approved strategy into measurable results: growing and retaining membership, diversifying revenue, strengthening stakeholder relationships, and developing high-value conferences, courses and other services. You will combine strategic leadership with hands-on execution as CNS transitions to a new organizational and governance structure.
What You Will Lead
· Strategy and organizational renewal: Develop and implement strategic, business and operational plans with the Board and relevant committees. Lead organizational improvements and priority projects, with clear milestones, resources and reporting.
· Growth and financial sustainability: Develop and execute strategies for revenue diversification, sponsorship, fundraising, grants and partnerships. Assess new opportunities through business cases and financial projections, and work with the Treasurer, Board and accounting support on budgets and financial management.
· Membership and volunteer engagement: Lead membership recruitment, retention and engagement strategies. Use member data and feedback to strengthen services, benefits and membership offerings, including organizational and group opportunities.
· Stakeholder relationships and visibility: Build sustained relationships with industry leaders, utilities, suppliers, government, regulators, educational institutions and partner organizations. Communicate the value of CNS membership and activities, maintain organizational agreements, and work with the Board to define and support the Society’s role in industry communications.
· Programs and events: Lead a financially sustainable portfolio of conferences, courses, webinars and professional-development offerings. Oversee administrative planning with the Office Manager and professional conference organizer, while volunteers lead technical content. Evaluate participation, member value and financial results.
· Governance and operations: Support the Board’s governance responsibilities, including policies, by-laws, nominations, elections, director orientation and meeting administration. Manage day-to-day operations and human resources in collaboration with the Office Manager and relevant committees, and oversee the annual report.
· A connected national network: Revitalize the branch network and strengthen alignment among Branch, Division and Committee Chairs through regular engagement, central support, and training and coaching as needed. Support career fairs and honours and awards activities.
Your Initial Priorities
· Support the Board in implementing the new governance structure.
· Establish regular engagement with key stakeholders to support membership growth, financial sustainability and the Canadian nuclear community.
· Lead organizational improvements in cooperation with the Strategic Planning Committee.
· Begin revitalizing the CNS branch network.
· Prepare an operational plan and agree with the Board on the sequencing and resourcing of ongoing initiatives.
What You Bring
· Proven experience in an executive leadership role.
· Strong strategic thinking and decision-making abilities, with the capacity to translate priorities into practical action.
· A demonstrable understanding of Canada’s nuclear landscape, including its major organizations and key stakeholders.
· Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
· Confidence in public-facing settings and strong public-speaking skills.
· The ability to build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders and partners.
What Success Will Look Like
Working with the Board, you will establish annual targets and report regularly on progress. Success will be reflected in stronger membership growth, retention and engagement; increased and diversified revenue; financially sustainable programs; new partnerships and offerings; broader organizational reach and stakeholder satisfaction; and delivery of strategic priorities on schedule and within budget.
