Mechanical Designer (1-Year Contract)
We are looking for an Mechanical Designer (1-Year Contract) for our Peterborough, Ontario site.
BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry’s most challenging problems. JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Design Services Manager, responsibilities of the Mechanical Designer performing this role include supporting the technical direction for the overall project and technical interfacing to both internal and external customers. Working closely with the Mechanical Engineering department, the Design Services department largely focuses on the design of mechanical equipment and systems for CANDU reactors. This includes conceptual and detailed design and development of mechanical equipment for automated and semi-automated fuelling machines, medical isotope systems, robotic systems, and maintenance tooling for nuclear reactors and related systems. This supports the overall project lifecycle of concept design, detailed design, design calculations, assessments, studies, technical document preparation and manufacturing, testing, commissioning, maintenance and operational support.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in the development, modelling and drafting of designs for automated and semi-automated equipment (i.e. piping, machined parts, assemblies, welded fabrications) using various 2D and 3D CAD software packages (i.e. SOLIDWORKS®, Inventor®, AutoCAD®)
- Work in an Engineering environment with other design personnel and in collaboration with teams of Professional Engineers and Technologists.
- Produce and update detail part drawings, assembly drawings, layouts, and bills of material.
- Selection of mechanical components.
- Application of dimensional tolerances (GD&T) and manufacturability/assembly (DFMA) techniques.
- Provide technical support to Engineering, Procurement and Manufacturing personnel.
- Participate in design reviews and occasional customer review meetings, preparing and presenting technical data, providing resource information and design inputs.
- Occasional travel to customer site locations within Ontario.
- Accountable for cost & schedule on assigned projects.
- Leading by example, assure compliance and adherence to processes (including internal Business Management System and customer change control processes), industry codes and standards, quality systems, policies, and contractual requirements.
- Support process change through process enhancement, and technology introduction to achieve world-class product development and product deployment.
- May support proposal development and review including scope review and estimating.
- Identify project risks and use problem solving methods to analyze solutions and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate these to the leadership team.
- Provide assurance of health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.
- Short term travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with clients and stakeholders.
REQUIRED:
- Mechanical Engineering Technologist (CET) or equivalent with related mechanical design experience.
- Experience with 3D parametric CAD software, preferably with SOLIDWORKS or Autodesk Inventor.
- Possess working knowledge of fundamental drafting techniques and practices including GD&T.
- Ability to independently create drawings using various software packages.
- Knowledge of machining practices and manufacturability constraints.
- Must communicate and work effectively with others.
- Demonstrated problem solving skills and independent decision-making ability.
- Possess strong attention to detail.
- Knowledge of engineering change control concepts.
- Must be able to multitask and work with minimal supervision.

Desired:
- Experience in design of mechanical systems
- Membership in OACETT or other certifying organization
- Experience with PDM (Product Data Management) for CAD file management
- Knowledgeable with Ontario CANDU or other industry ECC (Engineering Change Control) processes
- Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry
- Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards
- Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes and Standards
- Knowledge of machine design and DFMA
- Ability to interface with project team members, vendors and customers to ensure scope and
- requirements of the project are understood, and to ensure the project is executed per the project
- schedule and budget
- Ability to work on scheduled tasks independently and interface with other team members with varying functions (project managers, mechanical designers, software designers, etc.)

The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $68,000.00 and $102,570.26 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
