Our Thermalhydraulics & Safety Analysis branch is looking for a Systems Analyst who is responsible for the development and application of computer codes and analysis tools (e.g. ARIANT, ASSERT-PV) in support of design and safety analysis of current reactors such as CANDU and light water reactors, as well as innovative Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Capabilities in the areas of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, reactor physics, and fission product release are applied to safety assessments for design-basis, beyond-design-basis accidents, and severe accidents. The branch conducts both Deterministic and Probabilistic Safety Assessments to evaluate safety margins and the likelihood of postulated accidents. Major expertise areas of the branch include system thermalhydraulics, sub-channel thermalhydraulics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), multi-physics multi-scale modelling, safety analysis and uncertainties, severe accident modelling, and advanced reactor technology development. The branch’s comprehensive modelling and analysis capability supports CNL’s commitment to advancing reactor safety and informing the design of next-generation nuclear technologies. The Thermalhydraulics & Safety Analysis Branch contributes significant resources to maintain, administer, and upgrade the CNL S&T high performance computing centre (Athena, Minerva clusters). It also maintains a Windows server for thermalhydraulics codes (Condor).
A Systems Analyst / Programmer is needed to support CNL S&T high performance computing (HPC) and to contribute to the development of modelling capabilities in the S&T programs and projects. They will have an opportunity to both manage the CNL HPC facilities and to work in real world research projects (e.g. code development and multi-physics modelling). They will also work under the mentorship of one or more senior Systems Analysts (Programmers) which will facilitate knowledge transfer and enhance professional growth and development.
What will you be doing!
- Contributing to the planning, maintenance, management, and improvement of the CNL S&T HPC clusters to ensure their availability for CNL’s science and technology (S&T) missions.
- Contributing to the development of modelling and simulation capabilities in S&T projects by developing computer hardware, software, and networking solutions.
- Acting as part of project team in S&T projects and/or strategic initiatives on an as-needed basis, and helping to achieve commitments on time and on budget.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.

- Experience
- Background in computer programming (e.g. FORTRAN, Python, Java, C/C++, C#).
- Experience in computer programming and/or in design, maintenance and administration of HPC computer clusters would be an asset.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of and experience in object-oriented programming.
- Knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems, and high performance computing (HPC).
- Knowledge of code development, code validation and software quality assurance would be an asset.
- General knowledge of CANDU reactors and/or advanced reactors (e.g. SMRs) would be an asset.
- Abilities to work both independently and as a member of a team to deliver commitments on time and on budget.
- Excellent technical writing, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in the management and administration of workstations and servers.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
