Job Description:
The L3Harris Imaging Division-SSG in Wilmington, MA focuses on the design and production of space based optical telescopes. This business has produced optical equipment for many customers both commercial and government, including NASA. One of the many NASA space exploration programs that this business supported was NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/newhorizons/images/index.html). Imaging SSG Wilmington designed and built the telescope that flew on the New Horizons spacecraft and took the first close up pictures of Pluto and several of the outer planets’ moons.
The Space Superiority/Imaging site in Wilmington, MA is currently looking for a creative, problem-solving leader to:
- Team very closely with our manufacturing department to develop and implement manufacturing facility strategies to better meet our customers’ needs.
- Strategically plan for future manufacturing and facilities needs in a business that has grown 35% year over year.
- Manage our facilities team of 4 in the day to day management of the facility.
A successful candidate must be able to:
- Think strategically. Effectively plan for the facilities aspect of the manufacturing floor on a three-year horizon.
- Balance the tactical and strategic demands of facilities management and manufacturing planning.
- Coordinate with many functions (manufacturing, design engineering, program management, etc) on programs that are integral to the business.
- Effectively lead in a matrixed environment with many different internal customers.
- Transform the facilities team by improve efficiency, optimally meet the needs of our internal customers through process improvement and waste elimination.
- Coordinate all facilities related activities across the 4 leased buildings that make up of this business.
- Meet budgetary requirements for facilities related costs in the organization .
Essential Functions:
- Manage the facilities for the 3 buildings in Wilmington, MA in the areas of interior design, space planning, construction management, and operations (140,000 square feet).
- Lead quarterly (or more frequent) meetings with Manufacturing Program Leadership to establish facility specifications and plans for each program. Proactively coordinate manufacturing & facility planning activities with programs from proposal through delivery, lead cross functional teams to achieve an operational plan to optimize the space in order to support our development and production programs. Work with Manufacturing Program Leadership to create facility plans that:
- Identify square footage, specific spaces, and schedules for those spaces.
- Understand facilities needs to support the fit up of those areas in support of the manufacturing goals of the specific program.
- Allow for efficient execute on facility transformation plans as manufacturing spaces transition between programs.
- Use this data to identify conflicts and communicate across programs and up to senior leadership when facility conflicts exist.
- Lead with a Safety and Quality first focus within the department and across the entire organization. Jointly responsible for facilities, security, and health and safety standards within the facility.
- Develop and implement visual tools to help manage the department and facility, improve facilities management processes and systems including.
- Leads the facilities capital planning, tracking, and execution for the site.
- Drive 5S and application of lean tools throughout all of the facility’s shared areas (halls, conference rooms, kitchens, etc) and the areas owned directly by facilities (storage, tool rooms, etc).
- Develop and maintain metrics to create culture of data-based actions; use existing data/develop tools to create actionable information to drive improvement using Root Cause Analysis.
- Ensures facilities’ compliance with building codes, guidelines, and regulations, oversees contractor work.
- Lead real estate planning and expansion activities for the leased footprint.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in occupational health, environmental sciences, architecture, engineering, facilities management, business, or construction sciences from an accredited university or college along with a minimum of 9 years of prior related experience. Graduate Degree with a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience. 13+ years experience in lieu of degree considered.
- Has held management or leadership positions in the areas of manufacturing engineering, facilities planning, facilities engineering, manufacturing management, project/program management, and/or construction management.
- Experience in computer skills related to Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
- Ability to obtain a secret or top secret clearance.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Active communicator who is able to personally lead several simultaneous projects and communicate with external firms and internal customers.
- Strong collaboration skills, able to communicate and work effectively in a matrixed environment on a wide variety of facilities related topics, able to manage conflict effectively.
- Manages upward – capable of making recommendations to site leadership regarding activities or equipment assessed, and recommended solutions.
- Some experience with Capital Expenditure processes and guidelines.
- Knowledge and experience with Lean and 6 Sigma manufacturing principles such as 5S, value stream mapping, Kaizen, process control, etc.
- Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn local code compliance, OSHA and other related regulations with the ability to work with local, state, and federal agencies for required permits and applicable activities.
- Familiarity with industrial safety, accident investigation and prevention, and related governmental regulations (i.e.) OSHA, DEP, EPA, NFPA, local, state and other federal regulations.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Familiarity with Corporate Real Estate transactions.
- OSHA Electrical safety program implementation and management a plus.
