Assistant Shift Engineer

AtkinsRéalis operates the GTAA Cogen Power Plant (Cogen) and Central Utilities Plant (CUP). The Cogen is an aero-derivative combined cycle power plant, and the CUP provides heating and cooling streams via boilers and chillers respectively. Under the general direction of the Chief Operating Engineer and Shift Engineer, this role performs such duties that will assure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the CUP & operational support of the Cogen.
This role will be based in Mississauga, ON.
Your role within the team:
- Monitor, inspect, adjust, and control all CUP facility main and auxiliary equipment, consisting of boilers, electric and steam driven chillers, diesel generator, HVAC equipment, their auxiliary equipment, controls and that of COGEN facility balance of plant and equipment and systems to assure safe, legal, continuous, and efficient operation, keeping plant emissions and effluents within limits, under direction of the Shift Engineer. Taking necessary action to prevent any environmental or production excursions.
- Continually check all phases of the operation for difficulties or irregularities, troubleshoot as necessary by consulting manufacturer’s drawings and manuals. Report discrepancies in operation and/or conditions in a timely manner to the Shift Engineer.
- Maintain optimum level of operation and energy production.
- Provide general directions and safety oversight to subordinate classifications and third-party contractors.
- Assist in clarifying and enforcing plant policies.
- Maintain journals, logs, and various reports.
- Adheres to lockout/ tag-out, confined space entry, and welding permit policies.
- Perform assigned tasks in the analysis and production of treated water.
- Take necessary action to maintain the systems within prescribed limits.
- Perform maintenance repairs, where qualified, and assist others making repairs to all equipment. Perform lubrication tasks as assigned.
- Direct, assist, and performs unloading, off-loading, and storage of supplies and bulk chemicals. Be familiar with Plant’s policy in handling and storage of chemicals.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Shift Engineer (Inside Operator).

The ideal candidate:
- A 12th grade or equivalent education is required.
- A minimum 3rd Class Operating Engineer license with three or more years of thermal power plant working experience. A 2nd class license is preferred.
- Must be mechanically inclined and able to do minor maintenance.
- The position generally involves occasional sitting; frequent standing, frequent walking; moderate to heavy lifting, and carrying; frequent kneeling, twisting, and balancing; frequent climbing, reaching, pushing/pulling, and grasping.
- Operation of forklifts, elevated work platforms, machinery, and hand tools.
- Work with high-pressure steam and hot water lines, chemicals, and chemical equipment. Work includes high-pressure hydraulic lines, and electrical systems and components.
- Work in cramped or awkward positions at times. Will be required to work outside in inclement weather conditions. Exposed to noise and a hot work environment. Work in confined spaces or at high elevations when necessary.
- Work is performed on a rotating shift. Shift hours may be changed on occasion. Availability for overtime work assignments is required.
- The use of respirators, protective clothing and/or other personal safety devices will be required.
