Cost Controller

The Cost Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial aspects related to cost control within programs and projects, ensuring accurate budgeting, forecasting, and reporting. This role requires a strategic mindset to manage multiple projects within a program, drive financial efficiency, and provide actionable insights to stakeholders.
This role will be based in Mississauga, ON.
Your role within the team:
- Project Setup & Compliance:
- Ensure project setup aligns with company Project Controls processes, procedures, and governance frameworks.
- Establish cost control systems and maintain adherence to best practices.
- Support audit compliance and risk mitigation strategies for project finances.
- Cost Monitoring, Reporting & Analysis:
- Monitor, control, and report program and project financial performance throughout the lifecycle.
- Conduct trend analysis using actual data to refine forecasts.
- Provide regular, accurate cost status reports, including cost deviations with recommendations for corrective actions.
- Analyze budget variances and support cost optimization strategies.
- Leadership & Collaboration:
- Interface with project planners and schedulers to ensure integrated cost-schedule project control systems.
- Act as the Single Point of Contact for all cost and finance-related inquiries.
- Present financial findings to senior leadership and project teams.
- Change Management & Risk Assessment:
- Support the Project Control Managers in the coordination of change management processes.
- Evaluate financial risks and propose mitigation strategies.
- Ensure project financial impacts of scope changes are documented and addressed appropriately.
- Advanced Cost Control Systems & Reporting:
- Oversee implementation and optimization of ECOSYS cost management systems.
- Maintain commitment tracking and reporting for purchase orders (POs).
- Ensure accurate and up-to-date PMET (Performance Measurement Evaluation Technique) reporting with clear variance explanations.
- Prepare forward-looking cash flow forecasts for projects and business units.
- Provide inputs to internal and client reporting requirements.
- Government & Regulatory Compliance:
- Lead and support the preparation of Government funding applications.
- Collaborate with regulatory agencies for financial reporting adherence where applicable.
- Finance & Billing Coordination:
- Work closely with the Financial Shared Services Centre (FSSC) to initiate, review, and issue client invoices.
- Ensure financial controls align with corporate policies and industry standards.
- Special Assignments & Continuous Improvement:
- Drive financial performance improvements through efficiency and cost-saving measures.
- Lead initiatives for financial reporting enhancements and process automation.
- Take on ad hoc financial assignments and reporting requests as required.

The ideal candidate:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in cost control, including leadership roles in complex programs.
- Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel (advanced formulas, pivot tables, automation).
- Experience with Access databases and Visual Basic programming for financial modeling.
- Knowledge of ECOSYS or similar cost control systems.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities within a program framework.
- Analytical mindset with problem-solving abilities for cost optimization.
- Strong understanding of financial reporting principles, variance analysis, and risk management.
- Strong financial acumen and attention to detail in reporting accuracy.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills to guide project teams and stakeholders.
