Our Chalk River location is looking for a highly skilled Waste Specialist to join our team! In this role, you will be at the forefront of tackling the most complex waste challenges faced by our organization. You will play a pivotal role in developing strategies for planning, characterization, generation, packaging, treatment, storage and disposal of complex wastes, ensuring compliance with regulations. As a Waste Specialist, you will also have the opportunity to provide mentorship to technical waste resources throughout the waste management process, while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to find innovative solutions. What will you be doing!
- Providing technical proficiency for waste planning, quantification, establishing the nature and complexity of waste, radiometric determinations, reviewing and validating data, waste route selection and consignment.
- Drawing on a high level of waste expertise, guiding the definition of technical requirements and standards at a programme and project level and ensuring correct implementation of waste management activities within scope, schedule, cost and risk.
- Through positive interaction with stakeholders supporting the implementation of CNL’s Integrated Waste Strategy in a manner which aligns with industry best practices, delivers value for money and assists the development of commercial and scientific opportunities in anticipation of future industry requirements.
- Supporting waste generators that face these challenges directly and providing experienced customer service. Reviewing and presenting waste reports completed by the project team for waste generators and/or senior management to ensure legal compliance and liability reduction.
- Providing waste management planning guidance in alignment with CNL waste management processes and procedures.
- Developing detailed strategies and plans for managing specific types of nuclear wastes with non-radiological hazardous constituents (e.g., Mixed Wastes).
- Supporting the development of suitable qualified and experienced waste professionals to ensure credibility in CNL’s waste management programme.
- Participation and some facilitation of CNL waste community practices.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
- Education
- At a minimum, a Bachelors (Honour) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing; or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
- An advanced degree in an applicable field would be an asset.
- Experience
- Experience in waste processing, including sorting and segregation, packaging, transportation and minimization techniques.
- Thorough awareness and understanding of international guidance, industry best practices and the regulatory aspects of radioactive waste management.
- Experience developing innovative solutions to challenging waste forms, including mixed waste and cost-effective treatment options available to meet the waste acceptance criteria of waste receipt facilities.
- The ability to ensure that the facility is meeting requirements can be demonstrated through the application of verification and validation techniques.
- Ability to collaborate with others to achieve a single integrated and optimum solution, which ensures that the needs of the waste generator are addressed, as well as other factors arising from safety and environmental requirements and industry best practices.
- Ability to work against an agreed delivery schedule, identify and understand risks and issues related to delivery, and clearly communicate and escalate these when needed.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Providing waste management planning guidance in alignment with waste management processes and procedures.
- Providing technical review of key regulatory-related waste documentation, including the development, review or validation of Waste Acceptance Criteria documents, Waste Enquiry Forms, Waste Information Forms, Waste Data Forms, Technical Specifications and Work Plans and other waste-related documentation.
- Providing technical mentorship in the areas of waste management to Waste Advisors, Waste Characterization Specialists and Techs, Waste Data Techs, Waste Receivers (Ops), FAs and Generators (junior, intermediate, and senior-level CNL technical resources).
- Providing in-depth technical support to specific projects, where required, to improve technical and project performance (e.g. cost and schedule optimization).
- Developing detailed strategies and plans for managing specific types of nuclear wastes with non-radiological hazardous constituents (e.g., Mixed Wastes).
- Knowledge of Nuclear Safety and Control Act and underpinning regulations, Canadian Waste Management Regulations, and International Waste Management Regulations.
- Thorough understanding of nuclear management systems, including quality control and quality assurance programs, as they apply to radioactive waste management.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Location:
This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee. CNL’s Chalk River laboratory is nestled in the Ottawa Valley and affords our employees an area that is environmentally pristine with extensive forests, hills and numerous small lakes, all of which support a variety of wildlife typical to the southern edge of the Canadian Shield.
