Our Isotopes, Radiobiology & Environment Directorate (IRED), the Biology R&D Facility Branch at CNL is seeking a Veterinary Technologist to provide technical support to the Biological Research Facility (BRF) projects for the Federal Nuclear Science and Technology (FNST) program, commercial customers. What will you be doing!
- As a member of a team the incumbent performs in-vivo studies ensuring the ethical care and husbandry of laboratory rodents in support of the delivery of project commitments.
- Understanding and working under sterile conditions to maintain BRF Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) status.
- Understanding and closely following relevant company policies, CCAC Guidelines, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Quality and Safety programs, and Animal Use Protocol requirements.
- Possessing the necessary skills to communicate and coordinate with Management, study team, procurement, internal customers, vendors, etc.
- Undertaking training relevant to the position (e.g., Facility-Specific SOPs, Radiological Protection Training, GLP Training).
- Performing regular weekend work (usually 1 weekend every 6-8 weekends for 4 hours per weekend day), long weekend work (usually 1-2, 3-day weekends per year for 4 hours each day) and work during statutory and company holidays during the Christmas shut-down.
- Logging and maintaining equipment records as per established requirements and reporting and filing of equipment.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for :
- Education
- Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a field relevant to the position, such as a Veterinary Technologist Diploma or equivalent formal education.
- OR
- Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has more than 3 years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
- Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) certification is a great asset.
- Registered Laboratory Animal Technology (RLAT) certification is a great asset.
- Experience
- Minimum of 1-3 years of relevant experience is preferred.
- Experience with surgical techniques and tumour implantation through orthotopic routes in rodents would be an asset.
- Prior experience in working in a commercial pre-clinical drug development environment would be considered an asset.
- Prior experience in working in a GLP environment would be considered an asset.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Competency/prior experience in the following techniques in laboratory mice and rats are and assetIntravenous injections (tail vein)
- Blood collection (via saphenous vein)
- Oral Gavage
- Injection (IP, IM, SQ)
- Acts with initiative and independence under limited direction and requires minimal supervision.
- Good manual dexterity is required to perform delicate animal procedures.
- Must have effective oral and written communication skills.
- Group-2 Radiation Protection training, or ability to acquire it, is required (provided by CNL).
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as an effective team member, and the ability to respond to challenging schedule demands, is required.
- An understanding of and adherence to basic laboratory safety principles and ability to conform to and prepare standard operating procedures (SOPs) is required.
- Demonstrated ability to learn from and understand written material.
- An understanding of and adherence to the basic laboratory safety principles, the willingness to conform to and prepare QA and standard operating procedures (SOPs) is required.
- Acknowledgement and willingness to adhere to challenging schedule demands, overtime or flexible work hours including weekends is required.
- Knowledge of animal related standards, CCAC guidelines and federal, provincial, and local requirements is required.
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge and understanding of procedures, processes, equipment, and techniques both in theory and practice
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

- This position requires close contact with animals and potential allergens.
- This position provides lots of challenges and interesting task changes as new research projects begin but also consists of repetitive tasks.
- Overtime and flexible work schedules may be required, such as occasional weekend (rotation) duties.
- Working Environment:
- Opportunities for continuing education may be provided.
- This job requires special entry and exit procedures into and out of the building where the employee will be based and will perform work. Employees are required to change clothes frequently and wear lab coats, gloves, hair nets and surgical masks for a large portion of each day. The work environment is for the most part, devoid of windows and thus lacks natural sunlight. The office area is an open area with several people working in the same room however much of the working day may be spent working alone.
