The Safety Engineering department is responsible for the safety of the products and project solutions developed and deployed by the Hitachi Rail Urban Rail Signaling business line and compliance with safety principles, industry specific standards and best practices for the development of safety-critical systems.
The Safety Architect provides technical safety expertise to the safety team, enforces the safety strategy, develops and continuously improves safety methodologies and ensures that the execution of Safety Engineering activities is done in accordance with the company's process, applicable industry standards and best practices.
Key Accountabilities: - Contributes to the definition of Safety Engineering processes and best practices in accordance with the company's process, applicable industry standards and best practices
- Enforces the company's Safety Policy, to ensure that all solutions meet the company's safety requirements and the contractual safety requirements, while always seeking to improve the methodologies for providing these safe solutions
- Motivates the organization to consider safety in all aspects of work, in a business environment of budget and schedule constraints
- Motivates the organization to strive to increase consistency and reusability in the delivery of safety evidence
- Influences company culture, behaviors and practices and ensures all staff clearly understands their safety objectives and responsibilities and that they apply appropriate processes
- Supports and provides technical guidance to the Safety and RAM Engineering team members, in the execution of their responsibilities
- Stays current with practices and processes applicable to railway and other safety-critical industries (e.g. aerospace, military, nuclear, modern medical technology)
Key Requirements: - B.Sc. in Electronics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- Minimum 10 years of experience in a senior technical role in train control systems
- Knowledge of railway signaling systems, train control systems, fixed and moving block signaling principles, relay-based and/or computer-based interlocking design
- Good understanding of systems engineering, software engineering and functional safety
- Detailed knowledge of system safety lifecycle, system requirements definition, safety design concepts (system and software), safety and risk analysis
- Extensive experience with safety standards (CENELEC, IEC, IEEE, MIL), best practices, safety methods and techniques (examples: HAZID, HAZOP, PHA, SHA, OSHA, FTA, FMEA/FMECA, FSA) and hazard management
- Ability to lead and coordinate technical staff
- Good technical writing skills, excellent communication and analytical skills; excellent command of the English language, both written and oral
Preferred Qualifications: - M.Sc. in Electronics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- Working knowledge of Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) and/or Solid-State Interlocking (SSI)
- Member of Professional Engineer of Ontario (PEO) or Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE)
