The Role
As a member of the Technical Services sustaining projects department, you are passionate about ensuring safety and compliance in a dynamic project environment. As a safety manager you will ensure that all work activities conducted by Technical Services sustaining projects group align with corporate, divisional, site-based, and regulatory requirements. You will play a key part in monitoring the health of our safety-related management systems, fostering strong relationships with contractor partners to build capability, and overseeing the staffing and effectiveness of field safety personnel to maintain a safe and productive workplace.
In this role, you will:
- Stay current on industry trends and safety requirements that impact relationships with contactors and industry partners.
- Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including preparing messaging appropriate to the audience and delivering formal presentations as needed.
- Proactively identify and analyze complex, non-routine problems, often with no precedent, requiring research and interpretation.
- Oversee contractor safety teams ensuring accountability for results, resource allocation, and compliance with safety standards across multiple sites.
- Plan and coordinate staffing levels tactically to ensure adequate safety coverage across all sites in alignment with project requirements.
- Collaborate on innovation and continuous improvement initiatives, leveraging internal and industry expertise to enhance safety management systems and documentation.
- Apply sound judgment and interpretations of technical standards, industry practices, and departmental policies to make decisions.
- Assess and manage safety-related risks while providing guidance and escalating issues appropriately, ensuring compliance and stakeholder support for safe resolutions.
Required:
- Bachelors degree in a related field;
- Eight to 15 years of relevant work experience;
- Equivalent combination of education and work experience considered;
- National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO), Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP); or other related safety training certificate;
- High level of industry knowledge to effectively engage, inform, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders;
- Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving skills;
- Exceptional communication and organizational skills;
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively across teams; and
- Occasional travel to site by aircraft.
Recommended:
- In depth knowledge of OSHA regulations;
- Experience with job hazard analysis;
- High level familiarity with N286 and ISO frameworks;
- Ability to lead internal audits; and
- Understanding of project risk processes.
