Are you looking for a role that will challenge you? Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) is looking for a Field Services Assistant. The Field Services Assistant will support the daily waste management processing operations and support skilled trades, construction and de-commissioning, waste management projects, excavation, equipment/system installations/removal, etc.
What will you be doing!
- With successful completion of training the FSA supports waste processing operations, supports hazardous work (e.g., Radioactive/contamination handling, Asbestos handling/abatement, and chemical handling).
- Will be able to train in other Waste Management Area (WMA) areas to ensure there is potential support.
- Operate a variety of hand tools, including drills, forklifts, chain saws, cement saws, and other tools as directed by the trades, FSA lead hand and/or designate.
- Clean and move material and debris. Digging/backfilling trenches, and ditches, shoveling asphalt, snow, soil, waste materials, etc. Often working with scaffolds, lifts, and ladders as required.
- Load and unload waste bins as part of normal operations; move supplies and equipment as required including the physical ability to lift heavy objects safely.
- Operate bag monitor to perform waste clearance activities.
- When required - assist in preparing foundations/forms.
- Perform set up and tear down of the work site.
- Participate in all material and waste segregation and recycling as directed.
- Preparation of required documentation and records management for waste collection.
- Record keeping and reading instructions as required.
- Ability to complete required training and certification.
- Displays a high standard of safety at all times.
- Maintains a safe work environment and performs daily housekeeping activities in the facility and processing yard.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
What we are looking for:
- Education:
- Must have completed Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and ability to drive on-site as needed.
- Experience:
- Formal training and practical experience in the application of Radiation Protection (RP) principles.
- Training and practical experience in the application of Radiation Protection (RP) principles.
- Familiar with buildings and areas across the site would be an asset.
- Ability to cope with heights and confined spaces.
- Must be able to work effectively with a variety of personnel and represent the company both on and off site as needed.
- Must be able to identify non-conforming waste.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Able to follow verbal and written instructions and work with a minimum of supervision.
- Familiar with the operation of applicable equipment.
- Willing to undertake additional training appropriate to these duties.
- Utilize tools and procedures as required, plan own work, and make minor decisions.
- Must be responsible for accurate record keeping where applicable.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
- Working Conditions:
- The ability to perform physical work while wearing all required PPE&C, for example – air supplied suits, Tyvek, respirators, etc.
- Physically capable of working in confined spaces, varying temperatures, at heights, etc.
- Must be able to work outdoors for extended periods in adverse weather conditions.

Location:
This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee. CNL’s Chalk River laboratory is nestled in the Ottawa Valley and affords our employees an area that is environmentally pristine with extensive forests, hills and numerous small lakes, all of which support a variety of wildlife typical to the southern edge of the Canadian Shield.
