JOB PURPOSE:
The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist (EHS Specialist) will be responsible for the development and effective implementation of the site's EHS program, provide direction and assistance to the Leadership team, and support the overall site, in order to meet EHS objectives and regulatory requirements.
JOB STRUCTURE & COMMUNICATIONS:
- The EHS Specialist reports to the Director, Operations.
- The EHS Specialist has no direct reports.
- This role requires regular interaction with other departments and will work frequently with outside vendors and contractors, especially when those entities are working on-site. This role ensures onsite visitors understand and follow our EHS rules and regulations.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Develop and review health and safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with site and company policies and with government regulations and legislation.
- Lead the site’s migration to an ANSI Z10 compliant EHS program.
- Proactively review the workplace, worker practices and procedures, to identify hazards and take proactive measures to correct.
- Develop and maintain job hazard analyses by thoroughly reviewing workstation processes and/or project requirements and conducting employee interviews, interfacing with project engineers, and reviewing procedures.
- Lead the event investigation process; develop detailed reports based on root cause analysis, recommend solutions, assist in implementation of corrective actions, and follow-up where required.
- Assist with WSIB reporting and return to work process as needed.
- Manage and implement employee safety training including delivery of training and new employee orientation, contracting with third party trainers where appropriate, and maintenance of the learning management system (LMS).
- Lead and manage the Chemical Management Program for the site, including new chemical review and approval, maintenance of the SDS documentation.
- Participate in the change management process to ensure that facility, equipment and process changes are reviewed for environmental, health and safety implications and that appropriate controls are planned and implemented as part of the change.
- Lead the environmental compliance program, including generation, storage and off-site disposal of waste, and environmental emissions.
- Complete contractor Safe Work Plans and deliver safety orientations with contractors as required.
- Lead the industrial hygiene monitoring program.
- Promote safety initiatives and demonstrate a “safety first” mindset.
- Participate as a member of the Joint Health & Safety Committee
- Administer compliance tracking and record keeping systems (i.e. Gensuite) to record and disposition events, worker concerns, action items, periodic compliance tasks, and regulatory audits.
- Development and administration of the training program for BWXT PMI Operations Team, including administration of the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) Program, administration of the Knowledge Capture and Transfer (KC&T), development and deployment of content, tracking of training completion, and support of Human Performance (HU) program.
- Administration:
- Follow all company policies and health and safety procedures.
- Wears appropriate personal protective equipment at all times when required
- Report any personal workplace injuries to direct supervisor immediately.
- Report safety issues to direct supervisor as soon as possible.
- Maintain an acceptable level of performance by following established policies and procedures and participating in continuous improvement efforts by supporting and implementing new ideas.
- Set a positive example by maintaining a respective attitude, cooperating with co-workers, management, and internal and external customers.
- Be a productive team member and help to meet established departmental and Company goals.
- Report to work for your regularly scheduled shifts on time and ready to work.
- Effectively give and receive feedback and willingly ask questions and seek direction when needed.
- May work any and all shifts/days as required.
- Willingly accept responsibility of sharing skills and knowledge with other employees.
- Perform all other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or related field.
- 3+ years of experience working in occupational health & safety in a manufacturing environment with a focus on safety compliance.
- Excellent knowledge of governing occupational health and safety laws and regulations
- Interface effectively with all levels within the company as well as organizations outside of the business (i.e. Regulators).
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and spoken, required.
- Self-motivated, enthusiastic team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Hands-on problem solver.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and/or ANSI Z10 considered an asset.

The hourly rate for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $82,000 and $124,000 per hour. The rate offered is based on market location and may vary further depending on individualized factors for job candidates, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to those same considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
