Our Chalk River location is looking for a Software/Instrumentation Engineer (New Grad) to support our Assembly, Commissioning, and Electrical branch. What will you be doing!
- Providing software development support for tooling and equipment design within the Mechanical Equipment Development Branch, including selecting and interfacing with system instrumentation and control infrastructure.
- Authoring technical documentation related to system and software design and testing.
- Working in a team environment that includes mechanical engineers and technologists under the guidance of an electrical engineer.
- Evaluating and selecting programmable electronic systems such as data acquisition hardware, real-time controllers, microcontrollers and personal computers.
- Evaluating and selecting automation components such as signal conditioners and special purpose controllers (heating, hydraulics).
- Evaluating and selecting network components such as routers, switches, bridges, access points and mesh networks.
- Working with engineers to collect requirements and design appropriate control/acquisition/automation systems. Understanding mechanical systems and communicating software and control implications in a way that makes sense to a Mechanical Engineer.
- Writing technical documentation such as software requirements and designing and testing plans.
- Configuring and utilizing configuration management tools to do version control, change control and issue tracking.
- Interacting daily with software and instrumentation technologists, Electrical Engineers and mechanical design teams.
- Authoring clear and concise technical documentation.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
- Education
- At a minimum, a Bachelor (Honour) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing, such as in software, electrical, mechanical, or mechatronics engineering or a membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
- A bachelors degree in computer science combined with a strong mechanical aptitude would be an asset.
- Experience
- Generally less than 2 years.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- A desire and ability to innovate.
- The ability to learn, adapt, and pivot as new information is discovered or becomes available.
- Ability to work with and communicate with team members of other areas of experience to integrate work supporting a larger system.
- Design and development of PLC and/or LabVIEW control/acquisition/automation systems.
- Implementation of microcontrollers and single board computer such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
- Able to evaluate and select hardware as required to support mechanical systems.
- A keen interest and in robotics, digital twinning, machine vision and artificial intelligence.
- Software development using general purpose programming languages such as C, C++, C#, python.
- Software development of programmable logic controllers (PLC) using the PLCOpen in IEC 61131-3 programming languages.
- Software development LabVIEW visual programming language.
- Knowledge of operating systems such as MS Windows, Arduino, Linux.
- Basic understanding of mechanical systems.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. Location:
This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee.
