The Position
The Software Department at MDA Space is currently seeking a Database Engineer/MTS (Member of Technical Staff) on our Robotics & Space Operations team at our Brampton office. As our Database Engineer/MTS, you will be instrumental in using your skill and experience to design, implement, maintain custom, on-prem databases to process structured and unstructured data.
With 40 years of operational experience and proven performance on the iconic Canadarm programs including Space Shuttle and International Space Station robotics and operations support, our Robotics & Space Operations team has 100% mission success in making space dreams come true.
Job Responsibilities:
As part of a team:
• Review Database System Requirements and System Verifications documented by the System Engineers
• Understand and assess design issues, determine appropriate resolutions, and work with the team to address them.
• Continuously improve system reliability, performance, and capacity through proactive monitoring, automation, and optimization
• Develop and maintain internal build pipelines and necessary extensions, ensuring compliance and long-term maintainability
• Profile, benchmark, and troubleshoot performance issues at scale to identify architectural and operational bottlenecks
• Deep dive into Ceph and Couchbase code and architecture to optimize performance and scalability for production workloads
Required Skills/Experience:
• 2+ years of professional experience with Ceph, working in a production environment including deployment, configuration, and management of Ceph clusters and systems
• 2+ years of professional experience with Couchbase, working in a production environment including deployment, configuration, and management of clusters and systems
• Solid understanding of Linux/Unix systems engineering, networking, and storage I/O paths
Beneficial Skills/Experience:
• In-depth knowledge of Ceph performance tuning (OSD placement, CRUSH maps, BlueStore tuning, cache tiering, RGW optimization)
• Experience in site reliability engineering or similar role
• Experience with CI/CD and containerization and orchestration tools; Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes an asset
• Familiarity with mission-critical software, Matlab/Simulink, and computer-aided design tools would also be a benefit
• Familiarity with standard guidelines such as NASA Software Engineering and Assurance Handbook, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) would also be a benefit.
Comments/Special Considerations:
Successful candidates must obtain and hold security clearance at the reliability status level, and pass security assessment for the Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and ITAR.
