Software Engineering
We are looking for a Software Engineer for our Peterborough, Ontario site. BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry’s most challenging problems. Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada and is critical to delivering carbon free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.

JOB STRUCTURE & COMMUNICATIONS:
Reporting to the Software Engineering Manager. Responsibilities of the engineer performing this role include supporting the technical direction for the overall project and supporting technical interfacing to both internal and external customers. The Software Engineering team largely focuses on the design and development of custom software for various Fuel Handling sub-systems, tooling, medical isotope systems and remote delivery machines. The majority of our products use either automation technology (PLC, HMI, SCADA) or embedded systems (microcontrollers and legacy minicomputers). We also develop and use simulation and test software running on PCs and lab equipment. Our engineers participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle: Requirements definition, architecture, design, coding and debugging, formal testing, installation and long-term support at customer sites. We also qualify pre-developed software for use in a nuclear environment, and perform cyber security assessments.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Define and manage software requirements specifications based on existing high-level requirements.
- Define and document software architecture and low-level design.
- Code and debug software in accordance with standards and guidelines.
- Create and execute formal test plans including use of automated tools and scripting.
- Qualify pre-developed software and assess for cyber security concerns following industry governance and customer procedures.
- Support project level testing and commissioning, including in lab, shop and on-site environments.
- Support project level deliverables including but not limited to evaluations, reports, and assessments.
- Key success factors are engineering and product excellence, effective design activity management, task/milestone completion on-time/on-budget, producing defect free designs, meeting your metrics, motivating a diverse team, managing and achieving results through influencing and setting of expectations/actions.
- Leading by example, assure compliance and adherence to processes (including internal Business Management System), industry codes and standards, quality systems, policies, and contractual requirements.
- Support process change through process enhancement, and technology introduction to achieve world-class product development and product deployment.
- Support customer relationships and ensure market alignment. This position requires interaction with external customers, subcontractors, and cross functional internal teams.
- May support proposal development and review including scope review, estimating as well as technical presentations to the customer.
- Helps to identify project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate these to the leadership team.
- Provide assurance of health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.
- Short term travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with clients and stakeholders.
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
- B.A.Sc. in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related discipline.
- Working towards a current PEO license
- Typically requires 3 years’ experience in design engineering in Nuclear, Aerospace, Medical, Defense, or other highly regulated and process based design.
- Some ability to support leadership on engineering projects over their complete EPC life cycles with little support.
- Understanding of a range of interdisciplinary activities; systems design, requirements development, interface design and testing.
- Exposure to a broad range of interdisciplinary departments: Systems, I&C, mechanical and manufacturing.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, understandable by a diverse audience.
- Creative problem-solving skills, outstanding analytical abilities, developing leadership skills and the ability to work in a team.
- Flexibility to work remotely on short-term customer site assignment.
- Most importantly…. creative and innovative thinkers!
DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS:
- Experience with IBM Rational DOORS or other requirements management tools.
- Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry.
- Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards.
- Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes and Standards.
