Structural Engineer - Intermediate (1-Year Contract)
We are looking for a Structural Engineer - Intermediate (1-Year Contract) for our Peterborough, Ontario site. BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry’s most challenging problems. Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada and is critical to delivering carbon free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.

JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Pressure Boundary & Analysis Engineering Manager, responsibilities of the engineer performing this role include setting the design of mechanical equipment and systems for process and piping projects in the Nuclear industry. Pressure Boundary & Analysis Engineering is a Mechanical Engineering function that largely focuses on the design and analysis aspects of pressure-retaining systems and components for CANDU reactors. The Pressure Boundary & Analysis Engineering group is responsible for the design, analysis, regulatory requirements, development and test of pressure boundary equipment for automated and semi-automated fuelling machines, medical isotope systems, robotic systems, and maintenance tooling for nuclear reactors and related systems. This includes but not limited to concept design, detailed design, design calculations, stress analysis, design reports, design specifications, overpressure protection reports, assessments, studies, technical documentation preparation, and manufacturing, test, commissioning, maintenance and operational support.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Preparation or approval of design documentation, design reports, analysis reports, technical specifications, applicable codes & standards, development and test plans, and engineering quotations requests.
- Prepare and present technical data to internal and external customers as required.
- Act as a project/group leader for BWXT NEC dealing with major multidisciplinary projects related to the structural integrity assessment of nuclear Class piping, pressure vessels and heat exchangers and supports for pressure retaining components as well as for building structures, used in nuclear power plants.
- Design of Nuclear Safety Related structures in accordance with CSA N291
- Design of Conventional Building structures in accordance with NBCC and CSA S16
- Critically review engineering designs, test plans, and assess risks.
- Prepare project schedules, scope statements and budgets.
- Ensure that projects are implemented in accordance with the agreed scope and timelines and make relevant recommendations to the client.
- Work collaboratively as part of multi-disciplinary design teams.
- Chair project team meetings and provide technical direction.
- Manage timely completion of tasks per plan without direct supervision.
- Suggest, contribute, and champion initiatives to improve the Engineering Department’s operations and procedures.
- Support positive client interactions and sub-consultant interface.
- Provide execution of design and analysis of complex systems, structures and components.
- Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks is consistent with engineering policies and applicable standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor or Masters of engineering degree in relevant engineering field, such as Mechanical or Civil.
- Concentrated experience of at least four (4) years or two (2) years of focused study in advances subjects, such as Solid Mechanics.
- Knowledge and experience in the application of stress and stability analysis and fracture mechanics methods to structural integrity evaluations of nuclear plant components.
- Knowledge and experience in the application of the ASME Code to Nuclear class component design and stress analysis of degraded components.
- Knowledge and experience in the application of CSA S16 and / or AISC manual for design of steel structures.
- Familiarity with the content and application of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, especially Sections III and Section VIII
- Ability to rapidly perform structural integrity evaluations or design assessments and design of bolted joints and welds.
- Experience with design of structural anchorage to concrete in accordance with CSA A23.3 standard.

- Experience related to Nuclear Power plants.
- Experience with the following industry standards:
- CSA N291, CSA N285, CSA N289 Series and CSA W59, ACI 318 and ACI 355
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis Software such as:
- ANSYS, Stardyne, Abaqus
