Instrumentation and Control Engineer
We are looking for an Instrumentation and Control Engineer for our Peterborough, Ontario site. BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry’s most challenging problems. Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada and is critical to delivering carbon free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.

JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Instrumentation & Controls Engineering Manager, this role entails supporting the technical direction for the overall project and supporting technical interfacing to both internal and external customers. The Instrumentation & Controls Engineering department largely focuses on the control systems and instrumentation involved within Fuel Handling Systems, other parts of the plant, tooling, medical isotope systems as well as remote delivery machines. These systems are often complex and are in specialized areas. The department has the expert knowledge, legacy information and skillset to support our customers with engineering design, troubleshooting, maintenance and support work. We use such tools as AutoCAD®, AutoCAD Electrical® and IntEC® to create concept drawings, detailed designs, elementary drawings, BOMs, wiring diagrams and can also provide design replacement solutions for obsolete components such as relays, motors and circuit cards.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare elementary drawings/schematics, electrical assembly drawings, single line diagrams, equipment specifications, technical documents in compliance with applicable codes & standards.
- Liaise with personnel from various customer groups like design, operations, and maintenance to gather site-specific design information.
- Execute walk downs of various equipment in the plant.
- Prepare and present technical data to internal and external customers.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable company, technical, and regulatory standards.
- Participate in design reviews and customer review meetings, providing stakeholder and design input.
- Test execution/commissioning of complex equipment and systems.
- Review selection of components and equipment (e.g motors, cables, relays, junction boxes).
- Adhere to on-time/on-budget criteria associated with project commitments and customer success.
- Support the development and estimating of engineering proposals.
- Ensure that design support the development and estimating of engineering proposals.
- Ensure that design is done for manufacturability and complies with requirements.
- Support the development and estimating of engineering proposals.
- Key success factors are engineering and product excellence, effective design activity management, task/milestone completion on-time/on-budget, producing defect free designs, meeting your metrics, motivating a diverse team, managing and achieving results through influencing and setting of expectations/actions.
- Leading by example, assure compliance and adherence to processes (including internal Business Management System), industry codes and standards, quality systems, policies, and contractual requirements.
- Support process change through process enhancement, and technology introduction to achieve world-class product development and product deployment.
- Support customer relationships and ensure market alignment. This position requires interaction with external customers, subcontractors, and cross functional internal teams.
- May support proposal development and review including scope review, estimating as well as technical presentations to the customer.
- Helps to identify project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate these to the leadership team.
- Provide assurance of health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.
- Short term travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with clients and stakeholders.
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
- B.A.Sc. in Electrical/Instrumentation & Control/Automation or related discipline Engineering.
- Holds or working towards a current PEO license.
- Typically requires 3 years’ experience in design engineering in Nuclear, Aerospace, Transportation, Oil and Gas, Mining, or other highly regulated and process based design including but not limited to:
- Industrial automation technologies e.g. PLC, HMI, SCADA.
- Low voltage power distribution and control circuits (typically 600 V or less)
- Control and power relays
- Cabling, junction boxes and penetrations
- Motors and motor controls
- Valves (solenoid, pneumatic or motor actuated)
- Sensors and feedback controls/signal conditioning
- Demonstrated ability with supporting leadership on engineering projects over their complete EPC life cycles with little support.
- Exposure with a range of interdisciplinary activities; systems design, requirements development, interface design and testing.
- Experience working with and writing design documentation, including but not limited to:
- Assembly drawings
- Elementary/schematic drawings
- Connection wiring diagrams
- Component specifications
- Design requirements
- Commissioning requirements
- Test procedures
- Exposure to a broad range of interdisciplinary departments: mechanical, software design, systems engineering and manufacturing.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, understandable by a diverse audience.
- Creative problem-solving skills, outstanding analytical abilities, developing leadership skills and the ability to work in a team.
- Flexibility to work remotely on short-term customer site assignment.

DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS:
- Experience with IBM DOORS.
- Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry.
- Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards.
- Strong communication, presentation, and technical writing skills.
- General understanding of Engineering Change Control (ECC) concepts for the nuclear industry or other industries.
- Ability to interface with project team members, vendors and customers to ensure scope and requirements of the project are understood, and to ensure the project is executed per the project schedule and budget.
- Ability to work on scheduled tasks independently and interface with other team members with varying functions (project managers, mechanical designers, software designers, etc.).
- Ability to navigate the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and ensure designs comply to the CEC and other related standards.
- Project management and controls training; at minimum exposure working within these controls.

The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $65,000 and $102,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
