Senior Legal Counsel – 1 year contract

AtkinsRéalis Legal Department is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented lawyer to join the Canada Legal Team. The successful candidate will support and advise the company (in all sectors of the business) on a wide range of legal issues relating to engineering and construction projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in contract law and experience in the infrastructure industry.
This position would be ideally based in Toronto (but could also be based in Vancouver or Montreal).
The lawyer will be working on a variety of matters including contract and risk reviews, advising on and conducting contract negotiations (from teaming arrangements up to contract award), assisting with live project issues and work with a variety of key stakeholders across our businesses.
The lawyer will be working in an inclusive, collaborative and supportive team focusing on being trusted advisors; providing proactive, commercial, strategic legal advice and outstanding client service to their internal clients; as well as the development of its team members.
The position is a flexible mixture of home and office-based working with travel as required.
Your role within the team
As a member of the Legal team, you will report to the Regional General Counsel, Canada (Legal Affairs)
and be responsible for:
- Review, analyze and draft contracts to ensure compliance with legal standards and company policies.
- Negotiate contract terms with clients, partners and subcontractors to achieve favorable outcomes.
- Provide legal advice and guidance on contract-related matters to internal stakeholders.
- Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with contract terms and conditions.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to understand project requirements and ensure contracts align with technical specifications.
- Draft and revise contracts, agreements, and other legal documents as needed.
- Stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and best practices related to engineering services contracts.
- Conduct legal research and provide recommendations to support contract negotiations and decision-making.

Qualifications for the position
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in Ontario or other Common Law jurisdiction.
- Minimum of 6 to 8 years of experience in contract law, preferably within the construction/engineering industry or similar industry.
- Strong understanding of contract law principles and legal terminology.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work on a broad range of legal topics, manage multiple files, and to adapt to changing priorities;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in legal research and writing.
- Results-oriented and client-focused with a commitment to excellence;
- Ability to understand the client’s business needs, providing commercial and timely business solutions, in conjunction with legal advice;
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills;
- Strong analytical, problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills;
- Bilingualism and civil law training will be considered an asset;
