Our Licensed Nuclear Facilities Branch is looking for a Recycle Fuel Fabrication Laboratories Technician!
INTRO
The Recycle Fuel Fabrication Laboratories (RFFL) is a nuclear facility under the Licensed Nuclear Facilities Branch designed to handle and process alpha active material. Work in this facility includes the production of experimental quantities of Mixed-Oxide (MOX) fuel for reactor physics tests or demonstration irradiations, actinide chemistry experiments, nuclear forensics activities, the testing of new non-destructive technologies and molten salt synthesis.
The S&T RFFL Technician is required to support activities in the RFFL which includes activities such as: work as a member of a team in a nuclear facility performing, or contributing to, one of the many steps involved in fuel fabrication technology (MOX fuel and molten salt synthesis) and actinide chemistry experiments (for example alpha therapy). Tasks also include work in a glove box facility which is strictly regulated. Tasks are multi-disciplinary, and include interfacing with staff from: Fuel Development, Waste Management, Nuclear Materials, Radiation Protection, Safety, Radiobiology and Health etc.
What will you be doing!
- Conducts research and development experiments.
- Fabricates and characterizes fuel materials under the direction of the Supervising Technician.
- Perform and assist with the installation, inspections and modifications to fuel fabrication and other experimental equipment.
- Ensure that the equipment within the facility is operating in a safe and efficient manner according to regulations and procedures.
- Commission new equipment and apparatus for fuel fabrication and characterization.
- Conduct research and development and compliance tests in accordance with work plans, procedures, and technical specifications.
- Assist in developing work plans and procedures.
- Solve technical problems involved with equipment and procedures.
- Perform independent inspections and tests.
- Maintain zone inventories of fissile materials.
- Record observations and data in route sheets and logbooks.
- Participate in facility compliance activities.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
Education
- Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education in a relevant field.
- Secondary School Diploma or equivalent and normally has more than 3 years of pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
Experience
- One to three years of relevant experience will be considered an asset.
- Experience with fuel handling and glovebox work is an asset.
- Experience in a licenced nuclear facility is an asset.
- Experience with high vacuum systems, high temperatures, and gas handling is an asset.
- Hands-on experience performing experiments is desirable.
- Experience in laboratory practices and techniques, record-keeping, and organization skills.

- Mechanical aptitude

- Strong computer skills (including Word and Excel).
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and in teams.
- Ability to maintain awareness of surroundings and adopt safe lab practices.
- An aptitude in learning new skills, multitasking, meeting deadlines, and achieving objectives and goals.
- Working knowledge of chemical analysis techniques and equipment is an asset.
Security clearance eligibility required: Level 2 Secret which has a minimum requirement of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom .
