Instrument Technician
Location: Pinawa, Manitoba
Schedule: Four (4) - 10 hour shifts - Monday to Thursday
Job Summary
The Instrument Technician - Control Maintainer is responsible for performing their work in an efficient and timely manner. The incumbent must adhere to industry standards for installation, repairs, and safety. Decisions on tasks performed in this position will be based on the Red Seal Occupational Analysis or as defined in the Engineering Technology Profession.
CNL Employees perform all duties in accordance with established health and safety and regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (i.e. utilizing personal protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifies management or supervisor of all occurrences, injuries, illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers or any other on the premises in a timely manner and in accordance with established reporting requirements
A Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) or a Certified Industrial Instrument Mechanic, installs, tests, repairs and monitors technical instruments used in schools, hospitals, laboratories, apartments and industrial complexes. Industry depends on the skills of the incumbent to ensure fire and burglar alarms, closed-circuit television systems, X-ray equipment, temperature sensors and other instruments are properly installed and are in good working order. Must have completed a recognized engineering technology program or apprenticeship with additional equivalent training.

Education
- Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
- Must have a Diploma in Instrumentation or Electronic Engineering Technology and be certified in the Province of Manitoba as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) or a Red Seal Instrument Mechanic with additional equivalent training.

- Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security”.
Abilities and Skills
The incumbent is trained to install, examine, remove, repair and replace the following:
- pneumatic tubing and electrical wiring on existing installations
- temperature sensors and indicators
- pressure and vacuum sensors and indicators oxygen and gas analysis equipment in laboratories
- moisture and humidity sensing and indicating systems
- sensors and indicators measuring speed, position and timing
- components for X-ray equipment
- pneumatic or electronic transmitters and data scanning systems
- closed-circuit television systems
- monitoring and alarm systems
- radiation detection instrumentation
Formal training and demonstrated proficiency in the following areas of study:
- Mathematics, Chemistry and Science
- Blueprint Reading and Computer-Aided Drafting
- Technical Communications and Computers
- Electrical and Electronics knowledge
- Measurement Devices and Techniques
- Shop and safe work practices

- Analytical Instrumentation and Analog, Digital, and Radio Frequency (R.F.) Controllers
- Interlocks, Instrument Measurements and Application
- Industrial Processes and Instrument Control Process Applications
- Initiative and judgement to organize and maintain flow of work and accuracy of records;
- Must be punctual, dependable and safety minded;
- Detail oriented with the ability to meet deadlines;
- Exceptional organizational skills, able to prioritize and time management is required;
- Ability to understand detailed information is essential;
- Demonstrates responsibility and is accountable for accurately handling the details associated with one’s work;

- Able to work extended hours and off normal work shifts to support project needs

Functions and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use and application of applicable codes, regulations, and by-laws.

- Keep up to date with new developments in technology.
- Work from drawings and sketches as required, able to provide material take-offs and labour estimates.
- Read, interpret engineering drawings and specifications as outlined.
- Good planning and organizational abilities.
- Effective communication skills, especially when working with customers.
- Teamwork skills when working on large projects with co-workers.
- Work proficiently in a variety of assigned tasks.
- Highly motivated and able to work with a minimum of supervision.
- Problem solving abilities to change installation techniques to on-site working conditions.
- Experience in a wide variety of industrial and commercial work environment.
- Possess normal physical agility necessary to perform all aspects of the work.
- Possess the physical stamina to stand for long periods of time, work in awkward or cramped confined locations.
- Strength and the ability to work at heights on construction and industrial sites.
- Work on scaffolds, ladders and mobile lifts.
- Eye-hand coordination and dexterity and their ability to plan and think sequentially as well as three-dimensionally.
- Manual dexterity required to perform precision work.
- Knowledge of metallurgy and the effectiveness of the equipment being used.
- Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools; and, their ability to determine the most appropriate means of proceeding with the work.
- Able to wear and work in protective clothing including respirators.
- Mechanical and technical ability to troubleshoot and repair electronic/electrical, pneumatic and microprocessor-based systems and test equipment.
- Determine how equipment operates by looking at a diagram or blueprint.
- Maintains confidentiality in all matters.
