The Geomatics Specialist is an integral part of the project team, and provides technical expertise and support to a program that generates a vast amount of data. The Geomatics Specialist manages the project’s data on the enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS) platform. The role develops processes, applications and tools to capture, validate, store, analyze, protect, archive, retrieve, and retain data. The role is responsible for ensuring data acquired from various sources is integrated into the enterprise Geographical Information System and can be easily queried and visualized in the Web portal. The position reports to the Manager, Information Management.
What will you be doing !
- Developing and maintaining enterprise GIS portal.
- Analyzing, managing and maintaining enterprise GIS geodatabase including server administration.
- Performing regular monitoring and maintenance of web portal to troubleshoot and corporate IT and software vendor to address issues. Monitoring and optimizing performance of enterprise GIS geodatabase and web portal.
- Establishing data transfer standards, data validation and workflow between external contractors and the enterprise GIS geodatabase.
- Reviewing enterprise GIS Software upgrades/extensions/updates to determine benefits and uses for the program,
- Performing scheduled updates for vendor acquired products including data imagery, property boundaries, etc.
- Providing technical support to GIS team, GIS users, and external contractors.
- Providing GIS spatial, network, and statistical analysis.
- Developing datasets and processes to analyze data for specific project needs, including best practices.
- Combining different data sets to identify and analyze patterns to help improve the efficiency of the project.
- Utilizing GIS tools to effectively deliver cartographic products in various formats such as digital, print, and interactive GIS portal layers/maps for presentations and reports.
- Working closely with stakeholders to identify opportunities to leverage the GIS for addressing complex problems, and reporting requirements.
- Enabling and customizing GIS tools/workflows within applications to meet project requirements.
- Enterprise GIS Improvements and Enhancements.
- Assessing existing GIS models, schema, applications, and tools and recommend and implement improvements. Enhancing existing processes by streamlining workflow. Working with project teams to anticipate future requirements and opportunities.
- Planning for growth and performance challenges of a rapidly growing enterprise GIS and recommend strategies and solutions.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
- Education
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience
- Experience working in an environment of rapidly changing and conflicting priorities. Prioritization and planning skills to meet deadlines.
Strong communication skills and proven ability to maintain a cordial working relationship at all levels within the organization and with external vendors and contractors.
- Experience with ArcGIS Enterprise/ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro -ESRI software suite.
- Experience with customization, automation extract-transform-load (ETL) and supporting tools is an asset.
- Large volume data management and data integration experience is an asset.
- Some coding/ scripting experience with one or more of the following Python, Microsoft Visual Studio, Arcade, or similar program preferred.
- Previous experience working within a project environment.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrated analytical, evaluative and interpretive skills to effectively interpret environmental data.
- Familiarity with, and ability to work with third party service providers, contractors, and other data providers.
- The ability to create Arc GIS Dashboard web applications and experience working with ESRI hosted feature layers.
- Working knowledge of PostgreSQL or similar database.
- Experience with customization, automation extract-transform-load (ETL) and supporting tools is an asset.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is a must, some knowledge of AutoCAD is an asset.
- Good cartographic skills.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

CNL's Historic Waste Program Management Office is in Port Hope, Ontario's beautiful and historic community. Roughly 100 km east of Toronto, it is still close enough to the “Big City” without all the hassle of being in the “Big City.” As a leader in environmental remediation at nuclear and radiologically contaminated sites, CNL is implementing the Port Hope Area Initiative on behalf of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. The cleanup of historic Low-Level Radioactive Waste by CNL in Port Hope and Port Granby in Ontario demonstrates Canada’s commitment to the safe, long-term storage and management of nuclear waste.
