The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) is a community-based program to implement a safe, long-term management solution for historic low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) that has existed in the Port Hope area for decades. The PHAI was formed based on a legal agreement signed by the Government of Canada and the Municipalities of Port Hope and Clarington for the clean-up and management of the materials within the respective communities, in to-be-constructed aboveground waste management facilities.
Radiation Protection Co-op student will assist the Historic Waste Program (HWP) Radiation Protection team in implementing the Radiation Protection Program in Port Hope. This position spends most of the time out of the main office and in the field at Waste Water Treatment Plants and/or on remediation sites.

What you will be doing:
- Assist on Projects in a Group 2 (Radiation Protection Assistant) capacity, once trained. Duties may include source checking of RP instruments, calibration verification, monitoring vehicles and equipment for clearance off-site.
- Measure, record, and verify all readings from the field.
- Work under the guidance of a Group 1 Radiation Technician, to complete activities such as zoning, compliance surveys, contamination swipes, and radiation readings.
- Collect dosimetry (e.g. TLDs, PADs), and assist in sending for processing or calibration as required.
- Assist in document preparation, such as research or gathering information to include in procedures or operating instructions.
- Assists in preparation activities for Radiation Protection Training.
- Other duties as assigned.
What we are looking for:
- Knowledge of radiation hazards, radiation protection practices, and radiation protection principles.
- Knowledge and use of standard computer software programs on Microsoft Windows platforms such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience in the proper use of standard RP personal protective equipment and clothing would be an asset.
- Experience in performing direct and indirect contamination surveys for gross alpha and beta/gamma contamination using Ludlum contamination meters, smears and counting arrangements.
- Experience with Air monitoring equipment would be an asset.
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Be able to work as part of a team and meet deadlines and schedules.
- The candidate must possess a high level of personal accountability.
- Glass G driver’s license.

Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom.
